Chapter Sixteen:

A QUICK SHORELEAVE

Most of the crew would be taking two days off before the duties and responsibilities of resupply put the crew back to work again. Susan was waiting that morning with the Suburban, ready to take those weary sailors back to Santa Barbara for some welldeserved rest. Robert and Rena would remain with the Freeman Barnes for the first day, and then they would be relieved by Scott and Richard. Once Robert and Rena were back in Santa Barbara, the resupply engine would be back in full swing. The two were already placing orders from the Freeman Barnes for items that required some lead time.

For Jack, Susan, and Josh it would be a time for family activities that all looked forward to. Both Susan and Josh would be onboard the Freeman Barnes for the next two-week cruise to the Channel Islands. The past two weeks of exploration had been uneventful but very productive for the crew, and the consensus was that the danger was a thing of the past. Josh had been taking scuba diving lessons for some time and had just received his certification— not bad for a 12-year-old. He was so excited about the prospects that he could barely contain himself, and the same could be said of Susan. This would be the first opportunity since Josh was born for her to do some serious diving at the Channel Islands.

Jack, however, was not convinced that their troubles were in the past. That night he called Norm Bennett and invited him to breakfast the next morning. It was time for another briefing; and Jack wanted to know if Ramon, Juan, and James had been apprehended. If not, what were the prospects of this happening in the future? This and many other pertinent questions rattled through Jack’s mind. He couldn’t allow himself to believe that these three outlaws would not be back to pose another serious threat to the crew of the Freeman Barnes. His instincts were clearly signaling him that there were stormy times ahead, and it was with great reluctance that he agreed to allow his loved ones to be exposed to potential harm. Then again, it was only potential harm; and when the sun shines, it soon becomes a perfect world again.

This time it was Jack, Susan, and Josh who were waiting for Norm in the restaurant that morning.

“How’s it going?” Norm said as he sat down at their table.

“Same table, different day,” Jack responded with a smile.

“Yeah, some things never change, and you three are one of those things,” Norm replied.

With greetings and social amenities completed, Jack came directly to the point. When something was on his mind he was quick to speak of it.

“So, have you picked up those three fugitives yet?” Jack asked.

“Unfortunately, we have not. These punks pulled off their second disappearing act since being picked up in the Gulf. It’s not that we haven’t been using all of our resources to apprehend these lowlifes,” Norm said. “They’ve been staying one step ahead of us, as though they’re reading our mail.
